AS TRAIÇÕES DE GREGORY BENFORD — FUNDAÇÃO: O MEDO (1997)

A Segunda Trilogia da Fundação é um conjunto de romances de FC ambientados no universo ficcional criado por Isaac Asimov. Acabei de reler o primeiro desses volumes, Fundação: o Medo, de Gregory Benford. Os demais são, respectivamente, de Greg Bear e David Brin.

            In Philosophy of New Music—a work that discusses the paths taken by European music at the turn from the nineteenth to the twentieth century—Theodor Adorno, in reference to Stravinsky’s compositions, uses the expression “music squared.” He means music that prefers to manipulate historically established forms through procedures such as quotation, parody, and pastiche.

        Something similar has been happening to Star Trek in its transition from the twentieth to the twenty-first century. A growing part of contemporary Star Trek is no longer simply fiction projecting a future, but fiction recombining the historical forms of Star Trek itself. The musical, black-and-white noir, animation, puppets, the deliberate recreation of 1960s television: all of this suggests a franchise increasingly conscious of itself as an aesthetic repertoire.

        The problem—at least as many fans of the series perceive it—is that all these self-references are somehow merely concealing the show’s declining relevance. Studios, producers, writers, and actors are blamed. But here I would like to explore a different hypothesis: that the crisis of Star Trek is not necessarily artistic or creative, but the result of the disappearance of the historical conditions that once made its utopia believable.

Em Filosofia da Nova Música — obra que discute os caminhos da música europeia em sua inflexão do séc. XIX ao XX — Theodor Adorno utiliza, a propósito das composições de Stravinsky, a expressão “música ao quadrado”. Trata-se da música que prefere manipular formas já historicamente constituídas através de procedimentos como a citação, a paródia e o pastiche.

Algo similar vem ocorrendo em Star Trek em sua inflexão do séc. XX para o XXI. Uma parte crescente de Star Trek contemporâneo já é apenas não apenas uma ficção que projeta o futuro, mas uma ficção que recombina as próprias formas históricas de Star Trek. O musical, o noir em preto e branco, a animação, os fantoches, a reconstituição deliberada da televisão dos anos 60: tudo isso sugere uma franquia cada vez mais consciente de si própria como repertório estético.
